Syed Ahmad Shah (1931–2008), better known by his pen name Ahmad Faraz, was a renowned Urdu poet of Pakistan, widely celebrated for his romantic and resistance-themed Shayari. Born in Nav Shahra, with ancestral roots in Kohat, Faraz pursued his early education at Islamia College, Kohat, and later earned master’s degrees in Urdu and Persian literature from Edwards College and Peshawar University.
Faraz began writing Urdu Shayari during his college years and quickly emerged as a major voice in modern ghazal poetry. His poetic style, marked by emotional depth and lyrical simplicity, remains a hallmark of Ahmad Faraz 2-line Shayari, making his verses popular across generations. While deeply romantic, his work also carried the fire of protest and resistance, giving rise to some of the most powerful political Shayari of his time.
His early career included working as a producer at Radio Pakistan and teaching at Islamia College, Peshawar. A staunch critic of military regimes, Ahmad Faraz’s poetry often challenged authority. His bold expression led to imprisonment and self-imposed exile in Europe and Canada for six years.
After returning to Pakistan, Faraz served in significant cultural and literary roles such as Resident Director of the Pakistan National Centre, Director of Lok Virsa, Director of the Pakistan Academy of Letters, and Chairperson of the National Book Foundation.
His poetry collections — including Tanha Tanha, Dard-e-Aashob, Janan Janan, Shubkhoon, Merey Khwab Reza Reza, Beaawara Gali Koochon Mein, and Khwab-e-Gul Pareshan Hai — showcase the breadth of Ahmad Faraz’s love Shayari, as well as his critique of societal injustice. His best Shayari is often quoted for its poignancy and political edge. His collected works, Shahr-e-Sukhan Aaraasta Hai, remain a cornerstone of famous Urdu poetry.
Today, Ahmad Faraz’s Shayari on love and life continues to resonate with readers, especially through his widely shared two-line couplets and quotes that reflect the complexities of human emotion and resistance.
hava-e-zulm sochti hai
kis bhanwar mein aa gayi
vo ek diya bujha to
saikadon diye jala gaya
tu sirf dashna-e-nafrat
hi laharaata raha
tu ne kabhi dushman se
lipaT kar nahi dekha
na shab-o-roz hi badle hain
na haal achchha hai
kis barhaman ne kaha tha
ki ye saal achchha hai
kisi ko ghar se nikalte hi
mil gayi manzil
koi hamaari tarah
umr bhar safar mein raha
