Hakim Ajmal Khan, remembered in literature by his pen name Shaida, was born in Delhi in 1868. From an early age he memorized the Quran and studied Islamic learning, along with Arabic and Persian. He then received training in Unani medicine and soon became one of the most respected physicians of his time.
He was known for his remarkable diagnostic ability and for making Unani medicine accessible to people across India. He founded important institutions such as Hindustani Dawakhana, Central College in Delhi, and the Ayurvedic and Unani Tibbia College. His role in establishing these centers strengthened the position of traditional medicine in modern times.
Ajmal Khan was also active in the field of education. In 1920, he helped establish Jamia Millia Islamia in Delhi and served as its first Chancellor. His leadership gave the institution a strong foundation, and his vision of combining traditional and modern learning still guides its legacy.
Alongside his work as a physician and educationist, he wrote poetry in Urdu and Persian under the name Shaida. His verses carried sensitivity, depth, and social thought, showing that his creativity was not limited to medicine and public service alone.
Hakim Ajmal Khan Shaida passed away in 1927 in Delhi. He is remembered as a healer, an institution builder, and a poet whose life’s work enriched both education and literature.

kuchh roz hain guzaarne
aur kuchh guzar gaye
there is nothing more
to this world than this
some days to live
and some already gone
