Biography
Malikzada Manzuur Ahmad, widely known by his pen name Manzoor, was born on October 17, 1929, in Ambedkar Nagar, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in a family where education and culture held importance, which helped shape his path toward literature. With a thirst for learning, he earned postgraduate degrees in Urdu, English, and History, and went on to complete his doctorate in Urdu Literature.
He began his teaching career as a lecturer in history, English, and Urdu before finding his home at Lucknow University, where he eventually became Professor of Urdu. His academic career spanned decades, and he retired in 1989 after shaping many students who went on to become scholars in their own right.
Manzoor was a versatile writer. His novel College Girl gained popularity, while his monograph Urdu Ka Mas’laa and critical works such as Abul Kalam Azad: Fikr-o-Fan reflected his sharp literary insight. His poetry collections, including Shahr-e-Sukhan and Shahr-e-Sitam, earned admiration, while his autobiography Raqs-e-Sharar offered a personal and honest glimpse into his life.
Yet it was his mastery of mushaira compering that made him a household name. With wit, grace, and eloquence, he elevated the role of the compere into an art. His ability to engage audiences and introduce poets with charm made him the preferred host of prestigious gatherings, including the historic DCM Mushaira, international India–Pakistan sessions, and celebrated events at the Red Fort.
Beyond the stage, he served Urdu literature through various institutions. He was President of the Uttar Pradesh Urdu Academy, chaired the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmad Memorial Committee, and was associated with national councils for the promotion of Urdu. These roles highlighted his commitment to strengthening the language and giving it a respected place in education and society.
He was honored with more than eighty awards during his life, a recognition of his multifaceted contributions. Even after his passing in Lucknow on April 22, 2016, his legacy continues through his writings, his students, and his children, who also contribute to literary culture.
Malikzada Manzuur Ahmad is remembered as a scholar, poet, critic, and the voice that gave mushairas their grace. His presence and his words left an imprint that continues to inspire Urdu literature and its admirers.
