Biography
Kaifi Azmi, born Syed Athar Husain Rizvi, is celebrated as one of the foremost Urdu poets of the twentieth century. Hailing from Azamgarh in Uttar Pradesh, he displayed a talent for verse from an early age. Deeply influenced by the Progressive Writers’ Movement, his poetry took on a strong social and political consciousness, blending personal emotion with collective struggle.
Azmi’s poetry is marked by clarity, passion, and commitment to justice. He was not confined to romantic expression alone but used verse to speak about poverty, exploitation, and the dream of a more equitable society. Collections such as Aakhir-e-Shab and Sarmaya established him as a voice of the oppressed. His writing inspired readers to see poetry as both an artistic and revolutionary act.
In addition to his literary career, Kaifi Azmi left a significant imprint on Indian cinema. As a lyricist, he wrote memorable songs for films like Kaagaz Ke Phool, Haqeeqat, and Heer Ranjha. His lyrics stood out for their poetic depth, merging classical beauty with the needs of film storytelling. He also wrote dialogues for acclaimed films such as Heer Ranjha and Garam Hawa, the latter being a milestone in Indian parallel cinema.
Beyond poetry and film, Azmi was known for his activism. He worked to bring education and health services to rural areas, particularly his own village in Azamgarh, where he built schools and medical facilities. His social commitment reflected the same ideals of equality and progress that ran through his poetry.
Kaifi Azmi’s personal life also mirrored his ideals. His marriage to Shaukat Kaifi was a partnership rooted in shared values of art and activism. Together, they raised children who carried forward the family’s artistic legacy, most notably Shabana Azmi, who became an acclaimed actress and activist herself.
When Kaifi Azmi passed away in 2002, India mourned the loss of a poet whose words had shaped both literature and cinema. He remains remembered as a progressive thinker, a poet of resistance, and a cultural icon who bridged the world of poetry, film, and social reform.

tark-e-watan ke baad
in the cool shade of exile
i yearned for the heat of its sun
only after abandoning the homeland
did i understand its true worth
