Biography
Shabnam Shakeel was one of Pakistan’s leading female voices in Urdu poetry, admired for her graceful style and romantic sensitivity. Born in Lahore in 1942, she grew up in an environment steeped in literature and culture. Her father, Syed Abid Ali Abid, was a well-known poet and academic, and her home was often filled with discussions about art, literature, and philosophy. This intellectual atmosphere shaped her early interest in poetry.
She pursued her education at Kinnaird College in Lahore and later studied English literature at Punjab University. She went on to work as a teacher and academic, contributing not only through her poetry but also by mentoring young students and writers. Her career in education was as distinguished as her literary achievements.
Shabnam Shakeel’s poetry combined the grace of classical traditions with the tenderness of personal emotion. She wrote ghazals and nazms that explored love, beauty, longing, and the struggles of human existence. Her verses carried clarity and melody, making them accessible while still retaining literary depth. Collections like Shab Ka Rang and Tamheed showcase the richness of her voice and her ability to balance romantic expression with thoughtful reflection.
In addition to poetry, she also wrote essays and critiques, demonstrating her sharp insight into literature. She contributed to Urdu literary journals and participated in conferences, often speaking on the role of women in Urdu poetry and the evolution of literary expression in Pakistan.
Shabnam Shakeel was known for her elegance and warmth in personal life. She inspired respect and affection among colleagues, students, and fellow poets. Her presence in mushairas and literary gatherings was always marked by dignity and sincerity.
She passed away in Lahore in 2013, just days before her seventy-first birthday. Her death was mourned across Pakistan’s literary community.
Shabnam Shakeel remains remembered as a poet who carried forward the classical tradition of Urdu poetry while infusing it with her own romantic vision. Her words continue to be read by those who seek beauty, clarity, and emotion in verse.
