Akhtar Lakhnvi was born in Lucknow in 1934. He showed interest in poetry early on. In 1950 he migrated to Dhaka and eventually made his way into literary work and media. He worked as a journalist, and was associated with Radio Pakistan. He also wrote dialogues and lyrics for films. After the fall of Dhaka (1971), he moved to Karachi where he continued his literary and radio work. His poetry is known for its emotional depth, classical Urdu style, strong imagery, and themes of longing, separation, and introspection.
His published collections include Deeda-e-Tar, Shaakh-e-Nihal-e-Gham, Huzur-e-Sarkar and others. He had a respected place in Urdu literary circles through his radio work, film contributions, and poetry. Akhtar Lakhnvi passed away in 1995 in Karachi, leaving behind a body of work that is still read and admired by lovers of Urdu poetry.
