Biography
Nida Fazli was one of the most beloved modern poets of India, admired for his ability to turn everyday language into poetry that spoke to people across generations. Born in Gwalior in 1938, he grew up in a literary household where poetry was part of daily life. When Partition took place in 1947, much of his family migrated to Pakistan, but Nida chose to remain in India, a decision that shaped both his personal and literary identity.
He began writing poetry as a young man and soon developed a style that was uniquely his own. Instead of heavy symbolism or ornate classical expressions, Nida Fazli preferred simplicity. His verses used direct, conversational language that ordinary people could understand, yet they carried profound meaning. Themes of love, loneliness, faith, and humanity ran through his poetry, giving it a universal appeal.
His collections include Safar Mein Dhoop To Hogi, Mulaqat, and Kuchh Aur Nazmein. Many of his poems became popular for their straightforward honesty and emotional depth. One of his most quoted lines reflects his worldview: “Ghar se masjid hai bahut door, chalo yun kar lein, kisi rote hue bacche ko hansaya jaaye” (The mosque is far from home, so let us try instead to make a crying child smile).
Alongside his poetry, Nida Fazli built a successful career as a lyricist in Bollywood. From the 1970s onward, he wrote songs for films such as Aap To Aise Na The, Sarfarosh, Sur, and Is Raat Ki Subah Nahin. His film lyrics, much like his poetry, stood out for their clarity and heartfelt simplicity. Singers like Jagjit Singh, Lata Mangeshkar, and Chitra brought his words to life in ghazals and songs that remain popular.
Nida Fazli also worked as a literary critic and essayist, writing about the evolution of Urdu poetry and the role of literature in society. His balanced, thoughtful critiques won him both admirers and detractors, but they reinforced his reputation as a fearless and independent voice.
In his personal life, he was known for his humility and gentle nature. He married the writer Malti Joshi, and their daughter, Moshin Nida Fazli, carried forward the family’s literary spirit.
He passed away in Mumbai in 2016, leaving behind a legacy of poetry, lyrics, and essays that continue to inspire.
Nida Fazli is remembered as a poet who proved that simplicity can be profound. His words touched ordinary lives, making poetry a shared treasure rather than a distant art.
