Kamal Ahmad Siddiqui Biography

Kamal Ahmad Siddiqui was an eminent Urdu poet, scholar, and broadcaster born in 1926 in Delhi. He belonged to a generation of writers who combined deep respect for the classical Urdu tradition with a modern outlook. In his early years, he immersed himself in the study of Urdu, Persian, and Arabic literature, which gave him a strong foundation for his later poetic and scholarly work.

After Partition, he remained active in India’s major literary centres, especially Delhi and Kashmir. He earned a doctorate on Ghalib and became known for his writings on prosody, rhythm, and the finer points of Urdu poetry. His books included poetry collections as well as critical studies such as Kohsar Gaate Hain, Jawahraat, Kashmir Ek Manzarnama, Bayaz-e-Ghalib, and Urooz aur Ahang.

Alongside his literary career, Siddiqui also worked as a broadcaster with All India Radio and Radio Kashmir. He used the medium to bring Urdu poetry and culture to a wide audience, conducting programmes, interviews, and features that highlighted poets and writers. His contribution as a linguist and teacher further enriched his reputation, and he became a respected figure among scholars and readers alike.

His poetry shows a balance of classical form and modern sensitivity. It reflects the landscapes of Kashmir and the emotional and cultural currents of his time, while remaining rooted in traditional meters and images. He was praised for his ability to convey philosophical reflection and cultural memory with clarity and lyrical beauty.

Kamal Ahmad Siddiqui passed away in 2013. He is remembered for his scholarship on Ghalib, his efforts to preserve the craft of Urdu verse, and his role in keeping literary broadcasting vibrant. His work continues to inspire students, poets, and lovers of Urdu literature for its depth, discipline and heartfelt expression.
