Biography
Nasir Kazmi is remembered as one of the most beloved modern poets of Urdu, admired for the deep melancholy and quiet beauty in his ghazals. He was born Syed Nasir Raza Kazmi in Ambala in 1925. After the Partition of India in 1947, he migrated to Pakistan, first settling in Lahore, which remained the city most closely associated with his life and poetry.
His early years in Pakistan were marked by hardship and a sense of dislocation, themes that shaped his verse. Nasir Kazmi’s ghazals often carried a tone of sadness, solitude, and longing, yet they were expressed in simple, melodious language that touched readers immediately. His diction was plain, but his ability to capture fleeting emotions gave his poetry extraordinary depth.
He worked for literary journals and also as a broadcaster for Radio Pakistan, where his gentle voice and refined taste made him a familiar figure in literary circles. His first collection, Berg-i-Nai, published in 1952, brought him recognition as a sensitive new voice in Urdu poetry. Later works, including Deewan, Pehli Barish, and Koh-i-Nida, cemented his reputation as a leading modern poet.
Nasir Kazmi’s poetry was steeped in nostalgia. His ghazals frequently evoked rain, evening, loneliness, and the sense of loss after Partition. Yet even within sorrow, there was beauty, and his verses conveyed both fragility and resilience. Many of his couplets have become part of everyday expression, quoted in gatherings, songs, and even in casual conversation.
Despite his literary success, Nasir Kazmi’s personal life remained modest. He struggled with health issues, and his life was cut short when he died of cancer in 1972, at just 46 years old. His untimely death was mourned across Pakistan’s literary community, which saw in him a poet who gave voice to the quiet pain of a generation.
Today, Nasir Kazmi’s ghazals are still recited at mushairas, printed in anthologies, and cherished by poetry lovers for their emotional honesty and lyrical grace. His work continues to influence younger poets, keeping alive the tradition of the modern Urdu ghazal.

na mandir ka zikr tha, na masjid ka
the kids were fighting
in the neighborhood, not sure about what
it was such a relief that there was
neither the mention of temple nor mosque

only now and then
