Biography
Jaleel Aali, sometimes overshadowed by his fiery contemporary Habib Jalib, had a distinct voice that was both patriotic and philosophical. Born in 1926 in Sialkot, he grew up in a region that had already given Urdu some of its greatest poets, including Iqbal and Faiz.
After Partition, Jaleel Aali joined Pakistan’s civil services and worked in senior administrative roles, balancing his professional career with a deep love for poetry. He believed literature could both inspire and uplift, and he composed verses that carried themes of patriotism, identity, and social progress.
His ghazals and nazms reflected refinement and dignity. Unlike Jalib, whose poetry was radical and defiant, Aali’s tone was calmer, weaving optimism with subtle social critique. His patriotic poetry, in particular, earned wide admiration, and he often recited at official and literary gatherings.
For his literary achievements, he was honored with major national awards including the Hilal-i-Imtiaz and Sitara-i-Imtiaz. Beyond poetry, he supported cultural institutions and worked quietly to promote literature and education.
He passed away in Karachi in 2018 at the age of 92. Jaleel Aali’s poetry may not carry the fiery slogans of protest like Jalib’s, but it continues to resonate for its grace, optimism, and love for Pakistan.

bujhana pada hamein
for me to shine my lamp
as the moon
i had to snuff out
all the other lamps in the city

kamra viraan ho jata hai
ek tasveer hata dene se
where can the heart find peace
by forgetting her memory
the room becomes so desolate
by just removing one picture
