Anwar Sabri was an Urdu poet, religious scholar, orator, and political activist. He was born in 1901 in Pakpattan, Punjab. His early years took place under British colonial rule. He was educated in Islamic scholarship alongside his love for Urdu poetry.
Sabri’s poetry includes many ghazals, couplets and some nazms. His themes often reflect longing, spiritual devotion, human struggle, moral values, inner reflection, social issues, and the quest for justice. He combined poetic expression with religious sensibility.
He also took part in India’s freedom movement in some capacity, merging his poetic voice with activism. He was respected for his oratory skills in addition to his writing.
Some of his published works include Vo Jinhen Koi Nahi Janta, Nabz-e-Dauran, Saqi Nama, and Cheen Chalo. His voice was known among Urdu readers for its sincerity and for speaking both to the heart and conscience.
Anwar Sabri passed away in 1985 in Deoband, Uttar Pradesh. His poetry continues to be recited among lovers of Urdu literature. His legacy remains as someone who bridged scholarship, spiritual feeling, activism and poetic craft.
