ho aaye hain abhi to
phir aa kar gaye hain hum
i keep returning to
the lane of my beloved
barely do i reach before
it is time to leave again

The sher is a masterstroke of irony and rhythm. It captures the restless pull of love—how one cannot stay away, yet cannot stay long either. The lover keeps returning to the beloved’s lane (dildaar ki galee), but leaves almost as soon as he arrives, perhaps out of shyness, rejection, or habit. The repetition of aae and gae mirrors the emotional oscillation between hope and despair, arrival and departure. The tone is wistful, almost playful, masking heartache with casual phrasing. It’s about longing that refuses to die—an ache disguised as routine.
