Biography
Safi Lakhnavi was a distinguished Urdu poet from Lucknow who combined literary grace with social awareness. Born in 1862 into a respected family, he carried the elegance of Lucknow’s cultural environment into his poetry. From an early age, he showed a natural gift for words, and by the time he was in his youth, he had already made his mark in local mushairas.
His pen name “Safi” soon became synonymous with clarity and simplicity. Unlike many poets of his era who preferred ornate, heavily Persianised diction, Safi wrote in straightforward Urdu. This made his ghazals accessible to ordinary readers and helped spread Urdu poetry to wider audiences.
Alongside his literary life, Safi served in government service, working as a civil servant. Despite his professional commitments, he remained deeply involved in the world of literature. His verses often carried a touch of reformist thought, subtly addressing the social issues of his time while retaining the lyrical beauty of the ghazal.
Safi Lakhnavi’s poetry became popular not only in his lifetime but also in later generations. His ghazals are still recited and remembered for their natural flow and human warmth. Some of his verses have even been set to music, keeping his words alive in the oral tradition.
He passed away in Lucknow in 1950, closing the chapter on a life that bridged tradition and reform. Today, Safi Lakhnavi is remembered as one of the poets who kept Urdu poetry close to the people, choosing simplicity over ornament and meaning over embellishment.

ajab insaaf hai dekho
kahan karna, kahan bharna
the mistakes are of the past
but punishments given now
see what strange justice this is
where to do, where to pay?

if there is such restlessness
not sure what would happen
if the veil were to be lifted
