Hatim Ali Mehr Biography

Hatim Ali Mehr was an Urdu poet born in 1815 in Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh. He was a contemporary and acquaintance of Mirza Ghalib. Mehr was educated in the literary traditions of his time. Alongside his poetry, he also practiced law and served as Honorary Magistrate at Agra.

Mehr’s poetic work is noted for its refinement in the ghazal and sher forms. He wrote with elegance and expressive emotion, often touching on themes of love, longing, beauty, inner reflection, and social-moral landscape. He had command over linguistic nuance, using imagery and metaphor to evoke mood and emotion.

During his life he produced a number of collections. Among these were Almas-e-Darakhshan, Ayagh-e-Farangistan, Para-e-Arooz, Shuaye Mehr, Shuaa-e-Mahar, Masnavi-e-Humdam Akhirat, and Intikhab-e-Kalam Hatim Ali Mehr. His writing was well regarded for its polish and depth.

Hatim Ali Mehr died in 1879 in Etah, Uttar Pradesh. His legacy remains among lovers of Urdu poetry; his couplets and ghazals continue to be recited and appreciated for their musicality, grace of expression, and balance between classical tradition and individual voice.
