Biography
Maikash Akbarabadi was born in Agra in 1902 into a family known for its spiritual and literary traditions. His upbringing in a household deeply connected with Sufi thought shaped his poetic voice. From the start, his writing was filled with devotion, reflection, and a sense of universality.
Choosing the pen name Maikash, he devoted his poetry to exploring themes of divine love, unity, compassion, and human longing. His verses often reflected the Sufi concept of oneness, stressing harmony among people and an inclusive vision of life.
Maikash wrote in many poetic forms, from ghazals and nazms to rubaiyat, naats, and manqabats. His words carried both spiritual depth and lyrical beauty, making them resonate with audiences who valued both devotion and poetry. Alongside his literary work, he served as the caretaker of his family’s Sufi Khanqah in Agra, continuing a centuries-old legacy of guidance and service.
He passed away in 1991, leaving behind a body of work that continues to inspire. Every year, literary and spiritual gatherings known as Bazm-e-Maikash are held in Agra to celebrate his poetry and teachings. These events keep alive his message of love, tolerance, and the expressive richness of Urdu.
