Prasoon Joshi Biography

Biography

Prasoon Joshi is one of the most influential contemporary voices in Hindi and Urdu poetry, cinema, and advertising. Born in 1971 in Tehri, Uttarakhand, he grew up in a culturally rich environment. His parents, both academics, encouraged his early interest in literature, music, and performance. By his teenage years, he was already writing poetry that reflected sensitivity and awareness of social realities.

Joshi completed his post-graduation in management from IMT Ghaziabad, after which he entered the world of advertising. He quickly gained recognition for his sharp creativity and ability to connect with audiences. His campaigns for brands like Coca-Cola and HappyDent became benchmarks in the industry, winning him international acclaim. His advertising work earned multiple Cannes Lion Awards, establishing him as one of India’s leading creative professionals.

Parallel to his advertising career, Joshi made his mark as a lyricist in Hindi cinema. His work in films like Rang De Basanti, Taare Zameen Par, Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, and Delhi-6 combined poetic elegance with emotional power. His lyrics often carry a blend of simplicity and depth, capturing both personal feelings and collective aspirations. He has received National Film Awards and several Filmfare Awards for his contribution to cinema.

As a poet, Joshi has published collections that reflect his love for language and his ability to engage with contemporary concerns. His verses often highlight themes of identity, hope, social change, and the inner struggles of individuals. His style remains accessible yet layered, making his poetry resonate with a wide readership.

In 2015, he was honored with the Padma Shri for his contribution to arts and literature. In addition, he was appointed as the chairperson of the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) in India, where he worked to balance creative freedom with regulatory responsibilities.

Prasoon Joshi’s career demonstrates how poetry, cinema, and advertising can intersect to influence society. His ability to move seamlessly between artistic and commercial spaces makes him a unique figure in modern Indian literature and culture.
