Akhtar Saeed Khan was born on October 12, 1923, in Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, into a family of Afghan origin. His grandfather, Ahmad Saeed Khan, was a jagirdar known for his patronage of poets and scholars. Growing up in such a cultured environment, Akhtar Saeed Khan developed a love for literature early in life and began writing poetry during his student years.
He completed his matriculation from Punjab University in 1940 and earned a Bachelor of Arts degree from Dayal Singh College in 1944. He later studied law at Aligarh Muslim University and received his Bachelor of Laws degree in 1946. After graduation, he started practicing law, balancing his professional life with his passion for poetry.
Initially, he wrote in the nazm form, but soon discovered his natural strength in ghazal writing. His poetry carried the rhythm and imagery of classical Urdu tradition while reflecting the ideals of modern thought. He was closely associated with the Progressive Writers’ Association and served as its secretary in 1976, using his writing to highlight human values and social awareness.
His published works include Nigaah, Tarz-e-Dawaam, and Soch ke Naam Safar. These collections showcase his depth of thought, lyrical command, and sensitivity toward social issues. He earned respect among his peers for his disciplined craftsmanship and for preserving poetic grace while addressing contemporary themes.
Akhtar Saeed Khan passed away on September 10, 2006. His poetry continues to inspire readers and writers, standing as a bridge between tradition and modern sensibility. His legacy lives on through his words that mirror both beauty and purpose.
