Mirza Azeem Baig Chughtai was born in 1895 in Amroha, a town in present-day Uttar Pradesh. He was one of the most recognized humorists and fiction writers in Urdu literature during the early twentieth century. Known for his wit, imagination, and deep understanding of human behavior, Chughtai used humor as a tool to reflect on the social habits, contradictions, and moral concerns of his time. His writings brought laughter and reflection together, making him a household name among Urdu readers.
Chughtai began his career as a short story writer and soon became known for his distinct narrative style. He blended humor with satire in a way that entertained readers while prompting them to think about society’s flaws. His stories often centered on ordinary people and their everyday lives, showing how pride, greed, love, or foolishness could lead to both comedy and chaos. His language was simple, lively, and filled with natural dialogue, which made his characters feel real and relatable.
Among his well-known works are Chacha Chhakkan and Chacha Chhakkan ke Karnaame, which feature one of the most beloved comic characters in Urdu fiction. Through Chacha Chhakkan, Chughtai portrayed the quirks of middle-class family life in colonial India. The character’s exaggerated self-importance and frequent blunders made him both ridiculous and endearing. Readers saw a reflection of themselves in his humorous situations, which added to the popularity of Chughtai’s stories.
Apart from fiction, Chughtai also wrote plays and essays, always using humor to expose pretension and highlight social realities. He believed that laughter could be a means of moral correction, not just entertainment. His humor was never cruel or sarcastic; instead, it was gentle, warm, and grounded in empathy.
Mirza Azeem Baig Chughtai passed away in 1941, but his legacy continues to live through his timeless characters and sharp observations. His writing opened a new path for Urdu humor, inspiring later generations of writers to blend laughter with insight. Even today, his works remain fresh and enjoyable, capturing the spirit of human folly with affection and intelligence.

woh tifl kya girega jo
ghuTnon ke bal chale
only the skilled horsemen
fall in the battlefield
how can a weakling fall
that still crawls on its knees?
