Murtaza Barlas

Murtaza Barlas was born on January 30, 1934, in Rampur, Uttar Pradesh, India. He later moved to Pakistan in 1956 after completing his Master of Science in Mathematics from Agra University. Alongside his academic and professional success, he carried within him a deep love for Urdu poetry that shaped much of his life and legacy.

After settling in Pakistan, Murtaza Barlas joined the Punjab Civil Service in 1960. He served in various important roles such as magistrate, assistant commissioner, deputy commissioner, and commissioner. Even while holding demanding administrative positions, he continued to write poetry that reflected both personal and social awareness. His dual identity as a civil servant and a poet made him a unique figure, someone who balanced the discipline of governance with the sensitivity of art.
