Biography
Fahmi Badayuni, born Zamaan Sher Khan in 1952, grew up in the town of Bisauli in Uttar Pradesh. From a young age he was drawn to words and expression, though his early professional life was far removed from poetry. He first worked as a lekhpal, a village revenue official, and also taught mathematics and science. This balance of analytical thinking and creativity would later show in the precision and clarity of his poetry.
By the 1980s, Fahmi began to establish himself in mushairas, where his verses caught the attention of audiences. He wrote with simplicity, but behind his plain language lay strong emotions and deep reflections. His ghazals and nazms spoke of love, loneliness, loss, and beauty, while at times carrying a touch of sarcasm that made his poetry relatable to modern readers.
Over the years, he published several collections that enriched contemporary Urdu literature. His works include Majmooay, Paanchvi Simt, Dastaken Nigaahon Ki, Hijr Ki Doosri Dawa, Prem, and Akulta. These collections show his ability to turn ordinary feelings into extraordinary verse, making his poetry both accessible and timeless.
Despite gaining respect and recognition, Fahmi lived a humble life in Bisauli. He remained closely tied to his roots, never allowing fame to distance him from his simple surroundings. His poetry reached a new generation through print, gatherings, and later digital media, where his couplets continued to be widely shared.
Fahmi Badayuni passed away in October 2024 at his home in Bisauli. His death was mourned by readers, poets, and admirers across the Urdu-speaking world. Even though his life ended, his words continue to speak to those who search for beauty, truth, and meaning in poetry.
He is remembered as a poet who proved that simplicity does not mean lack of depth. Through his work, Fahmi left behind a legacy that will continue to inspire lovers of Urdu poetry for years to come.
