Azad Gulati is a prominent modern Urdu ghazal poet from Mianwali, Punjab. He was born in 1935 and educated in English literature, earning his MA in English from Punjab University. Later, he worked as a professor of English.
He has made his mark mainly through ghazals, but also has written nazms and sher. His poetry is recognized for a modern sensibility, yet rooted in the traditional Urdu ghazal form. Themes in his work often revolve around light and darkness, memory, longing, personal introspection, and the play of emotions in difficult circumstances.
Several collections of his poetry have been published. Among these are Aagosh-e-Khayal, Inkar, Jismon ka Banbas, Tikone ka Karb, Dasht-e-Sada, Nai Mausamon ke Gulab, Nai Ghazlein, and Aab-o-Saraab.
His style combines emotional depth and introspection with a careful use of language. Even while discussing universal human feelings, loss, desire, hope, despair, he keeps his expression vivid, often using imagery and metaphor. At the same time, his teaching and academic background show in a clarity of expression and structural control in his poetry.
Publicly available details about his early family life, any non-literary career, or personal milestones beyond his academic and poetic work are sparse. Also, there is no well-documented record of his death; he is still remembered and read among Urdu poetry enthusiasts.
