Biography

Mir Taqi Mir is remembered as one of the greatest poets in the history of Urdu literature, revered as Khuda-e-Sukhan, the God of Poetry. Born in Agra in 1723, he lived during a turbulent period of Indian history when the Mughal Empire was in decline. These upheavals, along with his own personal losses, gave his poetry its unmatched depth and pathos.

Mir’s early life was marked by hardship. He lost his father at a young age and struggled to make his way in the world. Eventually, he moved to Delhi, which at the time was the cultural and literary heart of India. In Delhi’s vibrant mushairas, Mir quickly gained recognition for his ghazals. His verses, filled with raw emotion and simplicity of language, struck directly at the human heart.

He later moved to Lucknow after Delhi was devastated by invasions and political turmoil. In Lucknow, he found patronage and continued to write, though his poetry always carried a tone of melancholy and longing that reflected his own restless life.

Mir’s Kulliyat (complete works) include six divans of Urdu poetry and many works in Persian. His ghazals became models for generations of poets after him, setting the standard for emotional honesty, simplicity, and elegance. While other poets often adorned their verses with elaborate imagery, Mir’s genius lay in expressing profound feelings in the simplest words. His themes ranged from unrequited love and loss to the fragility of life and the inevitability of death.

His personal life was filled with tragedy. He endured the loss of loved ones and lived through wars and chaos that scarred his times. These sorrows infused his poetry, giving it a depth that few could equal. Even today, his verses are quoted for their sincerity and their ability to capture the essence of human suffering and longing.

Mir Taqi Mir passed away in 1810 in Lucknow, but his legacy remains central to Urdu literature. He is regarded as a pioneer who helped shape the ghazal into its most enduring form. His influence can be seen in later poets like Ghalib, Iqbal, and Faiz, all of whom acknowledged their debt to him.

Mir’s poetry is timeless because it speaks of universal human emotions. His words continue to live in classrooms, gatherings, and hearts, ensuring that his title as the God of Poetry remains undisputed.
