Biography
Jaleel Manikpuri was one of the respected Urdu poets of the early to mid 20th century, remembered for his graceful command over both the ghazal and the nazm. Born in 1887 in the town of Manikpur in Uttar Pradesh, his pen carried the fragrance of classical traditions while also adapting to the modern literary movements of his time.
He devoted much of his life to poetry, producing verses that explored themes of love, sorrow, beauty, and reflection. His ghazals were admired for their lyrical charm and their ability to express emotions with delicacy. At the same time, his nazms showed his versatility, allowing him to write on a wide range of subjects beyond personal emotion, including social concerns and philosophical thought.
Jaleel belonged to a period when Urdu poetry was undergoing transformation, with writers exploring new themes while still rooted in classical heritage. His work reflects this balance. His nazms displayed clarity of thought, while his ghazals retained the elegance and rhythm beloved in Urdu tradition.
Though he may not have reached the same international fame as some of his contemporaries, Jaleel Manikpuri remained a prolific poet whose writings were deeply appreciated within literary circles. His verses continue to appear in Urdu poetry anthologies, keeping his memory alive among readers who value the richness of ghazal and nazm.
He passed away in 1976, leaving behind a legacy of poetry that bridges classical style with modern sensibilities. Today, Jaleel Manikpuri is remembered as a poet who gave Urdu literature both beauty and thought through his prolific contributions.
