Hafeez Merathi was an Urdu poet from Meerut, remembered mainly for his devotional works. He was born in 1992in an environment where Persian and Urdu literature shaped the cultural fabric of society. His early exposure to these traditions led him to poetry, where he developed a voice rooted in faith and spirituality.
Merathi earned respect for his Naʿt poetry, verses dedicated to the praise of the Prophet Muhammad. His writings carried both emotional warmth and simplicity, which allowed them to connect easily with readers and audiences. Alongside Naʿt, he composed Marsiya, poetry of remembrance that honored the tragedy of Karbala. These works gave his poetry a distinct place in Urdu literature.
Unlike many of his contemporaries who focused on romantic or social themes, Hafeez Merathi chose a devotional path. His verses reflected a deep sense of humility and reverence, making him a poet whose contribution was spiritual as much as literary.
He lived during a time of change in Urdu poetry, when new voices were emerging and experimenting with fresh styles. Yet Merathi’s poetry stayed close to traditional religious forms, which preserved its devotional value. Even today, his verses are remembered in gatherings where faith and remembrance are central.
Hafeez Merathi passed away in 2000, leaving behind poetry that continues to inspire devotion and reflection. His legacy shows how literature can serve not only as art but also as a medium of faith and remembrance.
