Biography
Anand Narain Mulla was a distinguished Indian Urdu poet, jurist, and politician who played a unique role in blending literature with public life. He was born on 23 October 1901 in Lucknow, a city with a rich literary and cultural heritage. His early education led him to pursue law, and he later established himself as a practicing lawyer before entering judicial service.
Mulla served as a judge in the Allahabad High Court, where his sharp intellect and deep sense of justice earned him respect. After retiring from the judiciary, he entered politics and served as a Member of Parliament in the Lok Sabha, representing the Indian National Congress. His career reflected a rare combination of law, politics, and literature, making him a prominent public figure of his time.
As a poet, Anand Narain Mulla chose to write in Urdu, despite being a Hindu by background, which highlighted the inclusive and composite culture of Lucknow. His poetry reflected progressive thought, sensitivity to social issues, and a humanistic outlook. He was associated with modernist trends in Urdu poetry, bringing a fresh perspective while still honoring the lyrical tradition. His ghazals and nazms often dealt with themes of justice, freedom, human dignity, and the changing social landscape of India.
In recognition of his contribution to literature, Anand Narain Mulla was awarded the Padma Bhushan in 1964, one of India’s highest civilian honors. His dual role as a judge and poet made him an inspiring figure who believed that literature and law could both serve humanity in their own ways.
He passed away on 12 June 1997 in Lucknow, leaving behind a legacy that bridged the worlds of literature, justice, and politics. Today, he is remembered not only as an accomplished Urdu poet but also as a symbol of the cultural harmony and intellectual richness of his time.
