Biography
Qayem Chaandpuri, born Muhammad Qayemuddin Ali in 1722, was one of the significant early poets of Urdu ghazal. He hailed from Chandpur in Bijnor district and lived during a period when Urdu literature was still finding its distinct voice. His early education included Persian and Arabic, which deeply influenced his literary style. These languages provided him with the foundation for the highly Persianized diction that marked his poetry.
As a poet, Qayem was a contemporary of Mir Taqi Mir and played an important role in shaping the Rekhta tradition of Urdu poetry. His ghazals were classical in form and adhered to the conventions of love, longing, and mystical reflection. The imagery in his work often echoed the Persian masters while still carrying the cadence of emerging Urdu. Though his fame did not reach the towering reputation of Mir or Sauda, he was respected among literary circles of his time and regarded as a refined craftsman of the ghazal.
Qayem’s poetry revealed a balance between lyrical simplicity and emotional depth. He wrote extensively on themes of separation, beauty, fate, and the transience of life. His couplets often showed a deep sense of melancholy and philosophical thought. Unlike some of his contemporaries, Qayem did not seek the grandeur of royal courts. He preferred a modest life in his hometown of Chandpur, where he continued writing until his death in 1793. Qayem Chaandpuri’s legacy lies in his role as a bridge between the Persian tradition and the evolving idiom of Urdu ghazal. While not as celebrated as some of his peers, he occupies a respected place in literary history as a poet who helped lay the groundwork for the richness of Urdu poetry that followed.
