Biography

Rajendra Manchanda Bani was one of the significant modern voices of Urdu poetry in post-independence India. He was born in 1932 in Multan, a region that became part of Pakistan after partition. Following the upheaval of partition, he and his family migrated to India, eventually settling in Delhi, where he spent the rest of his life.

He pursued higher studies at Delhi University, completing a master’s degree in English literature. This academic background gave his poetry a layered richness, allowing him to blend classical Urdu sensibilities with modern themes and expressions. Alongside writing, he also worked as an educator, teaching in Delhi while remaining deeply connected with literary circles.

Bani’s contribution to Urdu poetry lies in his ghazals, which were distinctive for their modernist outlook. He experimented with language, diction, and imagery, offering freshness to the ghazal form while retaining its lyrical beauty. His verses reflected the concerns of a changing society, addressing themes of identity, displacement, and the inner struggles of contemporary life.
