Biography
Kaleem Aajiz was a celebrated Urdu poet whose elegant ghazals and long-standing literary career made him one of the most respected voices of twentieth-century Urdu poetry. Born in 1920 in Telhara, Bihar, he belonged to a family that valued knowledge and culture. His early education introduced him to Urdu and Persian classics, while higher studies at Patna University gave him academic grounding in Urdu literature. He went on to earn a Ph.D., becoming not only a poet but also an accomplished scholar.
Aajiz gained fame for his mastery of the ghazal form. His poetry reflected both the timeless themes of love, separation, and longing, as well as the struggles and complexities of modern life. His style was marked by clarity, grace, and musicality, making his verses appealing to both connoisseurs and casual readers. Collections such as Woh Jo Shairi Ka Sabab Hua and Jahan Khushboo Hi Khushboo Thi established him as a poet who balanced tradition with freshness.
Beyond writing, Aajiz became a beloved figure in mushairas. For decades, he recited across India and abroad, drawing admiration for his gentle diction and powerful imagery. His presence in these gatherings helped keep Urdu poetry alive in regions where the language was fading, particularly in Bihar.
As an academic, Kaleem Aajiz served at Patna University, where he mentored students and contributed to research in Urdu literature. His dual role as poet and teacher made him an influential figure in shaping literary discourse.
His contributions were recognized with numerous awards, including the prestigious Padma Shri in 1989 and the Ghalib Award. These honors reflected not only his artistic achievements but also his role in promoting Urdu culture.
Kaleem Aajiz passed away in 2015 at the age of 94, leaving behind a rich legacy of poetry. He is remembered for keeping alive the grace of the classical ghazal while giving it a contemporary voice. His work continues to inspire lovers of Urdu poetry, ensuring his place among the greats of modern Urdu literature.
