Biography
Jaan Nisar Akhtar was an important Urdu poet of the twentieth century, remembered both for his role in the Progressive Writers’ Movement and for his outstanding contribution to Indian cinema as a lyricist. He was born in 1914 in Gwalior into a family steeped in scholarship and poetry. His father, Muztar Khairabadi, was himself a poet, and from this literary atmosphere Jaan Nisar inherited his love for verse.
He studied at Aligarh Muslim University, where his literary career took shape. As part of the Progressive Writers’ Association, he joined a group of poets and authors who believed that literature should serve society, highlight injustices, and promote human dignity. His poetry often reflected these ideals, addressing themes of equality, freedom, and compassion. At the same time, he was deeply sensitive to love and beauty, balancing romance with social awareness.
Jaan Nisar Akhtar published collections such as Pichhle Pehar and Khaak-e-Dil, which revealed both lyrical mastery and progressive thought. His ghazals carried classical elegance but often explored modern concerns, making him a bridge between tradition and contemporary sensibilities.
He also left a strong mark on Indian cinema as a lyricist. He wrote songs for films like Kaagaz Ke Phool, Chetna, Kala Patthar, and Noorie. His lyrics, often philosophical and poetic, elevated film music, and several of his songs remain timeless classics.
In his personal life, Jaan Nisar Akhtar married Safia Akhtar, herself a writer. They had two sons, Javed Akhtar, who went on to become one of India’s most renowned lyricists and scriptwriters, and Salman Akhtar, a noted psychoanalyst. After Safia’s early death, he later married Khurshid Akhtar.
Jaan Nisar Akhtar passed away in Mumbai in 1976. His legacy lives on in both Urdu literature and Indian cinema. He is remembered as a poet who carried forward the progressive vision of his time while leaving behind songs and verses that still move audiences today.
