Bahawalpur (Pakistan)
Maqbool Amir grew up in Bannu, a southern region in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where he was born around 1954 or 1955. His family lineage is said to trace back to the Sufi saint Hazrat Bahauddin Zakariya Multani. He did his early schooling in Bannu and later moved to Peshawar for higher education, completing his MA in Urdu. At some point he joined the literary institution known as Academy Adabiyat Islamabad as a Research Officer, a position from which he contributed to Urdu letters through both poetry and critical reflection.
His poetry is known for combining feeling and clarity, often drawing on personal experience but also touching on broader social, emotional, and humanist themes. One of his notable published works was Diay Ki Aankh which includes a collection of ghazals, poems, and couplets. Even while confronting illness, he suffered from a disease called scleroderma, but he continued writing and left behind poetry valued for its sincerity, depth, and accessible expression.
Amir’s style is often described as optimistic despite personal suffering. He had keen insight into daily life, emotions, longing, and human relationships, and he expressed his inner hopes, struggles, and reflections with simplicity and emotional directness. His poems found resonance among readers for their honesty and lyrical quality.
He passed away around 1990 or 1991, leaving behind his poetry, which continues to be read by lovers of Urdu poetry, especially in Pakistan. His legacy is that of a poet who, though perhaps not as widely known outside his region, merged classical Urdu literary sensibilities with personal voice, turning his life’s challenges into art that speaks to readers who value both feeling and craft.
