1936-2018,
Allahabad (Uttar Pradesh)
Fuzail Jafri was born on July 22, 1936, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh. He grew up in an environment where language and literature were deeply respected. From a young age, he showed an exceptional ability to observe the world around him and express those observations through words. Over time, this gift turned him into one of the most thoughtful poets and critics of modern Urdu literature. He spent most of his life in Mumbai, where he also worked as a teacher of English, balancing his academic career with his passion for poetry.
Jafri’s poetry reflects the voice of a man deeply aware of both inner solitude and the outer complexities of modern existence. His verses often explore themes such as loneliness, human struggle, and the quiet persistence of hope. He was known for his calm and reflective tone, using simple language that carried layers of meaning. His poems showed how beauty could be found even in pain and silence.
Among his best-known collections are Chattan Aur Pani, Kaman Aur Zakhm, and Rang-e-Shikasta. These works reveal his wide emotional range and his ability to link the personal with the universal. In Chattan Aur Pani, for example, he used the imagery of rock and water to represent endurance and flexibility in life. His poetry often painted a picture of resilience, showing how brokenness can also hold quiet strength.
Apart from poetry, Fuzail Jafri made significant contributions to literary criticism. He wrote thoughtful essays that examined contemporary Urdu writing and helped readers understand its evolution. His critical work displayed his honesty, patience, and belief that literature should touch both the mind and the heart.
In 2005, he received the Fakhruddin Ali Ahmad Ghalib Award for his achievements in poetry and literary research. Even with such recognition, Jafri remained humble and committed to his art, writing until his later years. He passed away on May 1, 2018, in Mumbai.
Fuzail Jafri is remembered as a poet of quiet grace and depth. His work continues to resonate with readers because it speaks to the timeless human need to find meaning amid uncertainty. His poetry reminds us that silence can be as powerful as speech and that truth often lives in the simplest words.

ye shikasta bam-o-dar bhi
humsafar ho jaayenge
in the desert of loneliness
learn the art of living
these broken doors and windows
will become your companions too
