1 Urdu ash'ar / shayari (shers, couplets) by
1729-1780,
Lahore (Pakistan)
Mohammad Hasan known by his takhallus Fidvi Lahori was born in Lahore in 1729 and died there in 1780. He lived in the period of Mughal decline and regional courts and witnessed changing patterns of patronage and poetic culture. He was a Hindu poet who adopted the Urdu language and culture in Lahore and achieved recognition among Urdu literary circles of his time for the subtlety of his expression and depth of sentiment.
Fidvi Lahori’s work is known for its refined use of imagery and its emotional sincerity. His couplets often explore themes of longing, separation, love, desire and loss. His style reflects a mastery of classical Urdu poetic forms of his era and shows strong influence of Persian vocabulary and metaphoric tradition. He had strong skill in using the economy of words to evoke mood, frequently writing in concise two-line shers that leave much unsaid and dwell in suggestion and feeling. At the same time his ghazals preserve musicality, rhyme and meter with elegance and restraint.
He composed poems in Urdu and ensured that even readers unfamiliar with Persian could feel his poetic voice through clear emotional appeal. He is remembered among classical Urdu poets for his ability to sustain harmony of form and meaning, for keeping beauty of language while expressing fragile human experiences.
Fidvi Lahori’s legacy survives in the many couplets and ghazals that continue to be recited, admired and included in anthologies of Urdu poetry. His words are often quoted by lovers of classical Urdu for their emotional resonance and for their capability of reaching the heart. Though much of his personal life beyond the poetic record is not documented in accessible sources his contribution to Urdu poetry places him among poets who shaped the early development of Urdu literary tradition in Punjab.

aashiq ka janaaza hai
zara dhoom se nikle
let’s walk along as wishes
spring from the heart of the dead
it’s a lover’s funeral,
let us celebrate with fanfare
