Biography
Sufi Ghulam Mustafa Tabassum was a distinguished Urdu and Punjabi poet, remembered for his unique contribution to literature, especially children’s poetry. He was born on 4 August 1899 in Amritsar and later moved to Lahore, where he spent much of his life. He pursued his education in Persian and earned a Master’s degree from Government College, Lahore, a place that later became central to his professional career as a teacher.
Tabassum was a gifted poet who wrote in Urdu, Punjabi, and Persian. His work included ghazals, nazms, and lyrical poetry that reflected both classical traditions and modern sensibilities. He gained immense popularity for his children’s poetry collection Tot Batot, which became a beloved part of childhood reading in Urdu-speaking families. The playful rhythm and simplicity of his verses allowed children to connect with poetry in a natural way, while also ensuring that his literary legacy reached the youngest readers.
Beyond his role as a poet, he was also an educator and served as the Head of the Persian Department at Government College, Lahore. His influence on students was significant, and he inspired many through both his teaching and writing.
Sufi Tabassum’s poetry also touched on themes of love, beauty, nature, and philosophy, expressed with clarity and elegance. His ability to write for both children and adults with equal mastery made him stand out in the world of Urdu literature.
In recognition of his contributions, he received some of Pakistan’s highest civilian awards, including the Pride of Performance in 1962 and the Sitara-i-Imtiaz in 1967. These honors reflected not only his literary talent but also his cultural impact on society.
He passed away on 7 February 1978 in Lahore, leaving behind a body of work that continues to inspire. His children’s poetry, in particular, ensures that his name remains alive in classrooms, homes, and libraries wherever Urdu literature is cherished.

woh zulf bhi lehraaye
it's not just the season of flowers
that has intoxicated the crazed
along with the spring clouds
her hair fluttered too
