Biography
Bashir Badr, born in 1935 in Ayodhya, grew up surrounded by an atmosphere of learning and literature. His love for poetry led him to Aligarh Muslim University, where he completed his master’s degree and later a doctorate in Urdu. His academic training gave him a solid base, but it was his natural gift for expression that turned him into one of the most admired poets of his time.
He published his first collection, Aas, as a young man. The book introduced readers to a fresh voice in Urdu poetry. More works followed, including Koi Aandhi Guzar Gayi and Umr-e-Guzishta Ka Hisab, which cemented his reputation. His ghazals are remembered for their simplicity and elegance. He wrote about love, longing, and the struggles of life in a way that ordinary people could understand and relate to.
Bashir Badr was also a beloved presence in Mushairas. His style of reciting poetry, combined with his thoughtful couplets, made him a favorite among audiences. Many of his lines have passed into everyday speech. They carry wisdom and tenderness, often with a touch of humor or irony.
Life was not always kind to him. In 1987, during communal violence in Meerut, his home was destroyed and many of his manuscripts were lost. This was a painful setback, but he did not stop writing. Later, he moved to Bhopal, where he rebuilt his life and continued to create poetry.
His contribution to literature was recognized with many awards. He received the Sahitya Akademi Award and the Padma Shri in 1999. These honors reflected his place as one of the most important modern voices in Urdu poetry.
In his personal life, he found strength in his wife, Rahat Badr, who stood by him during difficult times. Even in later years, as his health declined, his poetry continued to inspire and comfort people.
Bashir Badr is remembered as a poet who kept the tradition of Urdu alive while making it modern and accessible. His ghazals are still read, sung, and recited, keeping his legacy alive for new generations.

khafa ho to woh khafa hi lage
what a strange man
who smiles though upset inside
i wish he looks angry
when he is angry within

zindagi ki shaam ho jaaye
let our bright memories
continue to stay with us

life’s evening might fall
